Gaining full-time employment can be a difficult endeavor, especially for those who are just entering into the U.S. workforce. Temporary assignments are a good way to begin a new career or to fill in the gaps of a struggling one, but a truly effective jobseeker knows how to turn such temporary assignments into full-time, permanent positions by demonstrating hard work, efficiency and tact. In order to help you achieve success and have greater chance of obtaining a full-time offering through temporary employment, there a few tips and tricks to keep in mind.

Introduce Yourself

Companies that rely on temporary workers to supplement their staffing levels are used to dealing with a lot of people, and it can be hard to make a lasting impression because of it. Always be up front, take the initiative and introduce yourself when you arrive for your first day on the job, but also remember that nonverbal actions can be just as important as a spoken word, especially during temporary employment. Make sure to uphold a non-confrontational attitude at all times, maintain eye contact and, when acceptable, shake hands with your supervisors.  They will appreciate your openness, and this alone could be enough to secure that permanent position you’ve been seeking.

Complete All Tasks Thoroughly and On Time

This may sound like an obvious point, but temporary employees especially need to take the time, complete all assigned tasks and, if possible, reach out to take on additional responsibility. Your supervisors will notice this, even if you are in a temporary position, and it can go a long way in cultivating full-time employment out of your next temporary assignment.

Follow the Rules

It can be hard to keep track of the individual policies and procedures for each separate company, especially if you are an employee who tends to transition from one temp job to another. However, keeping abreast of the rules and regulations, including any applicable dress code, is a great way to make a first impression. Many employers realize that their temporary employees may not be familiar with every single caveat, so they’ll have a tendency to show some leniency. However, making sure to familiarize with all of the rules of your current assignment really does make a strong impression on your behalf.

Do Your Research

Getting to know the company and, if possible, your managers is a fantastic way to make a long-lasting impression during temporary employment. You don’t have to memorize the company’s entire history, but make sure to familiarize yourself with their mission statement at the very least. Learning about the organization and demonstrating your insight of the company is a sure sign of interest and dedication, and supervisors are likely to take note of it.

Initiate Follow-Up Communications

Believe it or not, you can still take a proactive approach to obtaining full-time employment even after your temporary assignment is done. It’s not a bad idea to contact your manager or supervisor, at a convenient time, and thank them for the opportunity, the experience and their time. This is a great opportunity to let them know that you are still interested in the position and available if a full-time position should open up in the future.
