Could the Hiring Manager NEVER See Your Resume?

Job seekers tend to go to great lengths when trying to get their resume noticed. From using fancy fonts and charts to colorful bullet points and even brand-specific logos, some will do nearly anything to try and separate their document from the rest. Unfortunately, at least some of these efforts are all for naught.

Understanding Applicant Tracking Systems

Many job seekers are under the false impression that interviewers and hiring managers are required to read every resume that comes their way. While it certainly helps them gain a better understanding of an applicant’s background, more employers are relying on applicant tracking systems (ATS) to filter out undesired or unqualified recruits and focus on those with the most potential.

Although modern ATS are a boon for employers, they can make it more difficult for qualified workers to secure interviews in the first place. This is especially true when these applicants approach the job seeking process in the traditional way.

In order to maximize your success, you need to understand how these systems work. Not only will this improve your chances of landing that initial interview, but it will ensure that your resume stands out from the competition.

Use Simple Keywords

Keywords and brief, one- or two-word phrases are the lifeblood of modern ATS platforms. Hiring managers and recruiters use these keywords to filter applicants and narrow down their results. As such, it’s critical to include the same keywords and phrases on your resume.

Avoid Online Applications

You don’t have to ignore them altogether, as many great job opportunities are listed exclusively online, but these are more likely to undergo ATS scanning than resumes that are hand-delivered.

Use a Standard Format

Some job seekers use intricate templates that use detailed charts and other graphical elements. While these look nice to a human hiring manager, they often conflict with modern ATS. Not only does this render them ineffective and obsolete, but such elements take up valuable resume space.
