Yes – You Can Find Your Next Job on Social Media

Given the growing prevalence of social media today, it was only a matter of time before employers started posting job openings and career opportunities on their company profiles. Some websites were even created with that specific purpose in mind. As such, some tech-savvy job seekers are now turning to the Internet in hopes of accessing new job opportunities that they might not have found otherwise.

Update Your Own Profile

Before you start perusing classified ads and job opportunities on the social media sites of today, it’s always a good idea to take a moment and revise your own online profile. For starters, make sure to include a profile picture that shows your professionalism. While a portrait of your face is always nice, some job seekers would prefer to remain anonymous while browsing social media. This is perfectly fine and acceptable, just make sure to use a profile picture that is copyright-free and professional.

You’ll also want to take some time to view your own online profile in order to make sure all of your content is not only appropriate, but also relevant to your field of expertise. There’s nothing worse than missing out on your dream job due to pictures or content posted in your past, but it is a trend that is becoming more and more common. If you don’t want an employer to see something, just don’t post it online. It’s as simple as that.

Finding Reputable Sites

Next, you’ll want to make sure you are browsing reputable sites when looking for job opportunities online. The Internet is full of scammers, hackers and would-be identity thieves, and online job portals aren’t exempt from cyber attacks.

With that said, many job seekers rely on LinkedIn when browsing online job opportunities. The site was built for the specific purpose of professional networking, connecting with new partners and accessing new career opportunities. Originally launched in 2002, the popular site currently boasts more than 400 million members.

Facebook and Twitter can also be used when searching for jobs online, though their effectiveness is somewhat limited due to their technical platforms. Many companies do maintain a presence on Facebook and Twitter, however, and the trend of advertising open jobs and new opportunities is certainly growing.

One of the biggest problems with LinkedIn, Facebook or Twitter, however, is the sheer amount of competition. As a result, some job seekers are adopting their own tactics and strategies when trying to find new opportunities online. Searching for meta tags or hash tags that relate to your line of work, browsing individual company websites and even, in some cases, clicking on paid advertisements may lead to employment.

The Future of Social Media

While the future of social media is anybody’s guess, it’s certainly a platform that is here to stay. With sites like LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter, and with new ones popping up nearly every single day, there certainly are a lot of online resources available.
