Staying Engaged During Marathon Interviewing Sessions

If you need to fill a large number of positions at once, you may face a constricted hiring schedule. And interviewing a lot of candidates in a short time span can lead to interview fatigue. Here are four ways to stay engaged throughout the interview process.

Break It Up

If the calendar allows for it, conduct two rounds of interviews: one that’s a high-level screening and a subsequent, more expansive interview.

Plan for Self-Care

If you’re conducting interviews all day, take steps to care for yourself physically and mentally. Schedule breaks – and stick to your schedule. Make sure to take time for lunch, and bring water and snacks to stay energized and alert. Finally, keep your interview materials organized in a bag or briefcase that will make it easy to keep resumes, questions, and other materials at your fingertips.

Focus Your Interview

In an ideal situation, you’d be able to do a deep dive with each candidate, not only to learn about their experience but also to see how they might fit into your company culture. However, if you’re crunched for time, you may want to focus on candidates’ skills and abilities to cut the number of questions you are asking.

Bring in Reinforcements

As is often the case, two (or more) heads are better than one when it comes to the hiring process. Enlisting co-workers to participate in interviews is not only a potential time-saver; it also provides additional perspectives on what questions to ask and what to make of the answers.
