Here Are the Off-the-Wall Interview Questions That Actually Work

The standard job interview is often tedious and monotonous for both parties. Many job seekers are tired of moving from interview to interview, while hiring managers and interviewers often get bored after a while. But you can add some extra life to the next interview simply by asking some fun and exciting questions.

As a superhero, what would your super powers be?

A fun question for both the interviewer and the interviewee, this is also a great way to break the ice. There are an infinite amount of potential answers to this one – and none are wrong or right. While some recruits will be intimately familiar with the world of comic books and comic book characters, others will have a limited knowledge of the subject. Regardless, almost everyone is familiar with one or two superheroes.

Not only do questions like this give you deeper insight into the creativity of a candidate, you can gain a basic sense of their workplace morale and attitude, too. Are they an employee who actively seeks out new work or opportunities to help others – like Superman – or do they tend to stick to themselves and take on independent roles – like Batman?

What would be the name of your biography?

This is another question that gives the candidate the opportunity to be creative. It also gives you the chance to evaluate their sense of self-confidence, self-worth and self-motivation. A recruit who has a history of related achievements, for example, will likely have a strong and clear title. One who is just starting out, on the other hand, might be a little unclear when titling their biography.

Who do you admire most and why?

Once again, this question has a plethora of possible answers. Candidates tend to choose historical figures, either from the distant past or from the current generation, but others will opt for a personal role model – whether it’s a friend, family member or loved one.

You can learn a lot from an applicant’s answer to this question – especially if they choose a historical figure. Those who choose sports icons are likely highly active and motivated. Candidates who highlight civil rights leaders are often invested in local movements and community-based initiatives. And you can be sure that candidates who admire former presidents will almost always carry themselves with a high degree of professionalism.

On a scale of 1 to 10 – how do I rate as an interviewer?

This question gives you the chance to improve your skills. None of us are perfect – there’s always room for improvement. If you have time at the end of the interview, you might ask them to fill out a short questionnaire.

If you do take the time to prepare a brief survey, break it down into specifics – such as body language, communications, professionalism and similar metrics – to gain insight into areas that need the most work. Improve your most troubled areas first and the remaining shortcomings will be easier to overcome.

Using Creative Questions Effectively

Not only do questions like this help to make the candidate more comfortable, they’re an easy way to add some variety to an otherwise boring and tedious job. When used effectively, they can help you gain even more insight into the true value of your potential new hires.
