5 Resume Tips for Administrative Assistants

As an administrative professional, you should understand your resume serves as an introductory portfolio of its own. In a field that revolves around data entry, accuracy and verification, it’s critical your resume showcases these skills within its format and layout. In addition, there are a number of tips and tricks that apply when searching for administrative jobs.

1. Grab the reader’s attention from the start.

Use the top of your resume to grab the reader’s attention right from the start. Utilize either a career objective or summary statement, which should appear directly under your name and contact information, to make a strong first impression. Using active, actionable words and avoiding passive, boring or repetitive language is the key to writing a great opening statement.

2. Update your resume with recent projects.

Its one thing to write down your current job and attach a few bullet points to it, but your resume will have a much bigger impact if you can describe specific projects. Including any facts, figures or statistics to illustrate the success of your projects will have a greater effect, but it’s not a requirement by any means.

You’ll also want to maintain some amount of relevancy within the administrative field. Listing prior projects in another industry doesn’t always translate well into clerical roles, so it’s critical you list projects and achievements that relate directly to the job you’re seeking.

3. Explain how you’ve improved on processes in your prior jobs.

The majority of today’s employers want workers who will become productive members of their team. With that in mind, it’s important to show you’ve improved on the internal processes or controls of your prior jobs. Once again, try to use hard facts and figures to illustrate your success wherever possible.

4. List the skills you’ve learned.

Many job seekers spend their time writing job descriptions and listing the achievements of their past jobs. While this is a necessary component of any good resume, it’s not the only part that matters. Make sure to devote a section of the document to your skills.

Whether you’ve learned them on the job, in school or through external training, it’s important to list your skills in a clear and concise manner. Not only does this give the reader a better understanding of your profile, but the words you use are easily scanned by the applicant tracking systems (ATS) that are so popular with employers and recruiters today.

5. Include examples of your work.

As an administrative professional, it’s a good idea to setup your own web page or social media profile. Not only does this serve as an extension of your resume, it’s a great way to connect with new and exciting opportunities in the field.
