How to be The Temporary Worker They Want to Hire

Workers who earn a living from temporary jobs are in a tight spot. Not only do you need to make a strong impression on any staffing companies you’re working with, but you also need to maintain a positive image for any new employers you meet, too. It’s not always easy to find the perfect balance between the two, but those who can often find more success than those who cannot.  

Impressing the Staffing Agency 

For now, try to focus your efforts on impressing the staffing agency and any representatives you may be communicating with. After all, they’re your first point-of-contact and entry into the world of temporary employment.  

  1. Have an updated resume that is complete and ready for submittal to various employers. Although some staffing agencies won’t necessarily use your original resume, it’s still important to have this information as presentable as possible right from the start.  
  2. Make your needs and expectations clear. This is the best way to find an enjoyable job that matches your skillset. If you require any special accommodations, make sure to communicate these as early on in the process as possible.
  3. Maintain consistent communications. Finally, make sure to communicate with your staffing agency in a timely, courteous, and professional manner. If your availability ever changes, let your agency representative know as soon as possible so they can make the necessary adjustments on their end.  

Impressing the New Employer 

Now that you’re off to a good start with the staffing agency, it’s time to switch your focus to the new employers you’ll meet during your time in the temporary employment sector. You can use all of the advice given above in the workplace, too, some unique tips apply to employers.  

  1. Show up on time and ready for each day. Few things are worse than an employee who is consistently late or unprepared for their shift. Instead, you can make a strong impression by showing up a few minutes early each day. If necessary, you can use this time to make any preparations needed for the workday ahead.  
  2. Collaborate with your co-workers. Employers like to see that their staff can get along in the workplace.  Moreover, many companies require direct teamwork between employees. You can help bolster your professional reputation by accepting new teammates, encouraging collaboration, and demonstrating your prowess for leadership.  
  3. Go above and beyond your daily responsibilities. If you want to make a strong impression with a temporary employer, try to put in extra work whenever possible. Not only does this show that you’re genuinely interested in the job, but it could help pave the way for future promotions and even a full-time position.
