How to Find a Second Job

The kids are back to school; the holidays are around the corner, you’re saving for a return to traveling – whatever your reason, sometimes you want the opportunity to make extra money.  So, what’s the first step? Knowing where to look – or, in this case, when. You see, a night job can be a great second job: the pay is often better, and it can often complement fit your current schedule. Here are a few typical night jobs to consider.

Cashier

Cashiers take and process payments in stores, restaurants, and other retail businesses. Cashier duties include working the cash register, issuing receipts, greeting customers, and answering questions. Employers hiring cashiers look for candidates who are:

  • Friendly and positive;
  • Have communication and math skills; and
  • Demonstrate attention to detail

Delivery driver

Businesses like Grubhub, DoorDash, and Instacart have led to an explosion in the need for delivery drivers, and local businesses are hiring as well. Employers want the following in a delivery driver: reliability, safety, and (of course) good driving skills.

Housekeeper

Housekeepers have various responsibilities, like sweeping, mopping, dusting and polishing. They ensure all rooms are cared for and inspected according to standards. And they make sure their cleaning equipment is protected and maintained. Businesses hiring housekeepers look for candidates who are skilled at time management, communication and service. They also want someone with flexibility and who shows attention to detail.

Picker/sorter

Pickers find and collect merchandise in a warehouse and prepare it to be shipped to customers, while sorters categorize products, remove defective items and maintain a clean and organized production area. These jobs call for a strong work ethic, teamwork and attention to detail.

Production line worker

Production line workers (also called assembly line workers) fabricate and assemble parts, transforming them into finished products. If you want to apply for these positions, you’ll need dexterity, stamina, attention to details, good communication skills and teamwork.
