Ways to Make Your Onboarding Program More Fun

In today’s competitive job market, acquiring quality talent is at a premium. So is keeping it. Luckily, what you do in your new hires’ first days with the company can set them up to be successful and keep them around for the long haul. In fact, a study by the Brandon Hall Group found that organizations with a strong onboarding process improve new-hire retention by 82% and productivity by more than 70%.

Part of what makes for a good onboarding program is the fun factor. Here are some suggestions for making your new employees smile from minute one on the job.

Give New Hires a Swag Bag

Everybody loves goodies, and new employees are no exception. You can make them feel welcome and rewarded by offering them a collection of shirts, mugs, and other items with your logo. It’s also an effective way of promoting your brand.

Tell Your Employees’ Stories

There’s nothing that reinforces the idea that a new hire made the right choice of employer quite like letting them hear from your best and brightest. Depending on your onboarding schedule, you could invite employees as special speakers during orientation or produce a video that lets them tell their stories like a mini movie. Either way, be sure to highlight the diversity of your workforce.

Let New Hires Get to Know Their New Team

This tip can function at two levels. First, you can take new hires on a tour of your organization, so they get a feel for how different departments interact to achieve your company’s objectives. Second, think about setting some time aside so new employees can get to know their immediate teammates in a relaxed setting to create an opportunity for early relationship building.

Create a Corporate ‘Survival Kit’

While the venerated Employee Handbook is, of course, a staple of onboarding materials, consider creating a companion kit with the emphasis on facts that are both fun and useful. This “survival guide” could include a list of the best area restaurants (don’t forget the delivery menus!), a “provisions map” that shows them where in the building to find office supplies, and a “most wanted” list of key contacts. Let your imagination go wild!
