New in Town? Check Out These Job-Hunting Tips!

If you’re new to or considering moving to the Carolinas or Virginia, welcome! You’ll find this corner of the Eastern Seaboard to be welcoming and full of potential. One of your top priorities will be finding work here, and Megaphone wants to help make your job search as quick and painless as possible. Here are a few steps to get you on your way to success.

Update Your Resume and Cover Letter

If it’s been a while since you last reviewed your resume, you’ll definitely want to give it a onceover. Not only should you update your experience, but of even more direct importance, you should also remove references to your current or former address, depending on where you are in the moving process. You might want to consider including your move to a new area as part of your cover letter’s introduction.

Identify Potential Work Locations

One of the great things about the Carolinas and Virginia is that there are quite a few population centers in a relatively small area. Keep this in mind when you’re looking for places to work. For instance, if you’ll be living in Charlotte, you don’t have to limit your search to Charlotte businesses. Towns like Mooresville, Denver and Gastonia in North Carolina, and Rock Hill and Clover in South Carolina are all within 30 miles of Charlotte.

Inform Your Network

Be sure to let your family, friends and professional connections know of your move. Just a little bit of networking could uncover prime opportunities in your new hometown.

Make a List of Businesses in Your New Area

To help organize your job search, you may want to start a list of moderately sized to big companies in your new neighborhood. Local chambers of commerce and chapters of the Better Business Bureau are excellent resources.
