Four Preventable Mistakes in Your Next Job Interview

The typical job interview is stressful enough, but many job seekers are sabotaging their own chances of success without even realizing it. If you really want to make strong first impression the next time you show up for onboarding, orientation or an interview, try to avoid all of the following mistakes. This may be easier said than done, especially for some of the points on our list, but all could be equally costly when it comes to your career.

Showing Up Late

It’s never a good idea to show up late – especially for the interview. Not only is this is a sign of unprofessionalism, it shows the interviewer you’re not truly interested in the job. This one’s easily avoidable by arriving 10 or 15 minutes earlier than your scheduled appointment. But what happens if you absolutely can’t make it?

Employers and hiring managers understand that emergencies do happen. In this case, make sure to notify the interviewer – via telephone, preferably – as soon as possible. Not only does this give you the opportunity to reschedule for another time, but it might even save your chances of landing that job.

Constantly Checking Your Phone (or other devices)

This one should go without saying, but the prevalence of mobile technology has many of us staring at our phones for the better part of the day. But this is a huge no-no during a job interview. Instead, leave your mobile devices in the car. This ensures an uninterrupted interview that lets both you and the interviewer focus on the task at hand.

Problems With Hygiene

It’s easy to take a casual approach to the interview. After all, there’s no guarantee you’ll get the job; why go to extreme lengths to prepare as if you already have the job? Well, the answer goes back to an age-old adage: “Dress for the job you want, not the job you have.”

Instead, treat the interview as if it’s your first day on the job. You wouldn’t show up to a new job with dirty clothes, bad breath or messy hair, so why do it for the interview? Such poor attention to hygiene, even during the interview process, raises immediate red flags concerning your value as an employee.

Presenting a Negative Attitude

Finally, try to project a positive and confident attitude at all times, including during the interview process. If you’re new to a job, try to be nice to everyone you meet. Not only is it common professional courtesy, but you never know who your supervisors and managers might be – the last thing you want to do is offend them with an off-handed remark or comment on your very first day.

Making the Most of Your Next Interview

Now that you know what to avoid, it’s time to focus on the habits and tricks you can use to increase your chances of landing that dream job. While success is never guaranteed, knowing the exact skills and qualities your hiring managers are looking for can go a long way in securing you the exact job you want.
