For men and women alike, being ghosted on the first date is one of the worst feelings in the world. Not only does it leave them wondering what went wrong, but it also robs them of the opportunity to work on their shortcomings.
However, according to 76 percent of the respondents in a recent survey, not hearing back from a potential employer about a recent job interview is an even worse feeling than being ghosted after the first date. To avoid this, try to use the following tips when rejecting a candidate.
Provide a follow-up as soon as possible.
Your time is valuable – it’s understandable that you don’t want to waste it by responding to every single applicant. However, even a simple email or phone call goes a long way. Whether you plan on highlighting some areas of improvement for the candidate or even if it’s just to deliver a straightforward rejection, you should make an attempt to follow-up with every interviewee.
Give the applicant a chance to ask questions.
If you do have the time, try to work with individual applicants who fell just short of making the final cut. This lets candidates know that you’re willing to work with them to help them succeed – and your company’s reputation will see a direct benefit.
Offer alternate opportunities.
Instead of rejecting a candidate outright, you might be able to offer them a job elsewhere in the company. If so, try to contact them as soon as possible – you never know when another opportunity might turn up in their favor.
Let them know about the potential for future employment.
Just because a candidate is rejected the first time, it doesn’t necessarily mean that they’re disqualified from re-applying in the future. If this is the case, make sure to let them know. If possible, give them a timeline for re-applying – most companies require applicants to wait a minimum of six months before submitting another application.
