“What Do You Do in a Crisis” – How to Answer That in an Interview

The standard job interview can be a stressful time. It doesn’t matter if you’re a workforce veteran or if you’re a first-time jobseeker – there’s always some anxiety to overcome. Some hiring managers try to soften the process with fun and creative questions, but one that almost always pops up is “What do you do in a crisis?”

Such open-ended questions tell the interviewer a lot about your attitude, personality, and past job experience – so you should always take your time and think about the answer before giving your response.

Cover the Most Important Details

Ideally, you should try to keep your answer as brief as possible. This is easily achieved by sticking to the most important details. What is the exact crisis you’re describing? How did it come about? How did your actions directly affect the outcome? Answering questions like this lets you give the interviewer a quick, concise, straightforward and satisfactory response.

Explain the Process

Feel free to spend a little more time when it comes to explaining the thought processes behind your actions in the field. When did you first realize there was a crisis to begin with? Did you consult with any of your peers or managers before taking direct action? What was their response?

Not only do questions like this help the interview gauge your decision-making abilities, but they draw attention to your ability to think on your feet and respond to problems in the workforce.

Use Real Examples

If possible, try to use actual examples from your past jobs. You don’t have to mention specific names or locations, but describing your response to an actual crisis that you’ve worked through in the past goes a long way. Not only does it save you the trouble of having to make something up on the spot, but it ensures that your response will be relevant to the industry and type of job you’re seeking.
