3 Reasons to Become a Forklift Driver

Forklift drivers are always in high demand throughout the United States. From the east coast to the west coast and everywhere in between, qualified forklift drivers are needed in factories, warehouses, storage yards, construction sites, and more. While many work in some capacity within shipping or receiving, forklifts are also used in order picking, inventory control, and general material handling.

Most entry-level forklift drivers make around $15 an hour, while the most experienced and efficient drivers can earn upwards of $20. A basic forklift certification is required, and most companies only consider applicants who are aged 18 years or older with a high school degree or equivalent. As you can see, it’s not a job for everyone – but it offers great benefits to those who do fit the bill.

Plenty of Job Opportunities

As mentioned, forklift drivers are always in demand. They’re found in nearly every industry, including automotive, aerospace, manufacturing, and more, and there’s usually more than enough work to keep drivers busy on a day-to-day basis.

Easy to Switch Between Companies

Forklift drivers can easily switch between jobs and even companies. Since forklift driver certification is a standardized credential that is transferrable, most drivers are rarely without employment. However, depending on the company you work for, as well as the exact type of materials you’ll be handling, you might need to pursue additional qualification or certification – such as hazardous material certification.

Once your credentials have been secured, however, they typically transfer from one company to the next. Forklift drivers often beef up their resumes by pursuing these additional certifications. Not only do they lead to greater job security and longevity, but some companies offer increased pay or benefits for those with additional certifications.

Recruiters Are Actively Filling These Roles

Finally, recruiters are actively filling these roles – and similar ones – as we speak. With so many factories, warehouses, and construction yards in the United States, it’s one of the most popular roles seen by today’s recruiters.
