Interview Attire Mistakes To Avoid

Most job seekers spend a lot of time obsessing over their job interview attire – and for a good reason. The proper wardrobe can make or break an otherwise successful interview, so you must be up-to-date with the current styles and trends.

In a casual business interview, for example, the preferred dress is tailored khakis and a polo or button-down shirt.  When interviewing for a senior-level role, you might even consider wearing a tie and a formal, three-piece suit. Becoming familiar with nuances like this can increase your odds tremendously in today’s job market.

With that in mind, here are some common attire mistakes to avoid during your next job interview:

  • Bright or flashy colors. Try to minimize the use of different colors in your wardrobe. Although it might seem drab and boring, going with a color scheme that’s dull or unassuming – like blue or grey – is generally acceptable for any job interview.
  • Excess perfume, cologne, or makeup. While it’s okay to wear some perfume, cologne, and makeup, try to keep it to a minimum. Remember, this isn’t a blind date – it’s a formal job interview. Making the distinction and treating the interview appropriately can go a long way in determining your overall dress and style.
  • Headphones.  While headphones and earbuds are incredibly common today, it’s important to put such accessories in your pocket before starting an interview. It doesn’t matter if they’re used for listening to music or handling business calls – the job interview ahead of you requires – and the interviewer deserves – your full attention.
  • Accessories.  It is okay to wear your favorite watch, earrings, or necklace to a job interview, but don’t overdo it. There’s no reason to be overly flashy or braggadocios here – at least not when it comes to your wardrobe. Instead, you’ll impress the interview through your resume, your body language, and your overall demeanor.
