Factors to Consider When Choosing Work Boots for The Job

Industrial settings, including many factories and shops, often have strict footwear requirements. Many of these standards are due to safety concerns – such as wearing steel toe boots to protect your feet from heavy or sharp objects. Thankfully there are enough styles, designs, and variations available today that it’s still possible to find boots that are functional and comfortable.

Weight of the Boot

Start by considering the weight of your new boots. Some designs, especially those that include a steel toe or thick treading, can be quite heavy. Boots made of genuine leather tend to be on the heavier side as well, due to the overall weight of the raw materials.

If possible, spend some time walking around in your new boots before using them in the workplace. Not only will this give you a better idea of their overall comfort, but it also gives your legs – primarily your calves and thighs – a chance to adjust to the weight.

Balance

It’s also essential that you’re able to maintain proper balance in your new work boots. Too much weight in the toe puts added tension on the shin and ankle, which could lead to discomfort and even pain by the end of a long workday.

This is why you’ll want to look for a boot that is as balanced as possible. Designs with larger heels are often used to compensate for the added weight of a steel toe in the front, while others use thinner, lightweight treads in the front.

Cushioning

The final factor you should consider is cushioning. After all, you can always use an insert to increase the comfort later on, if needed.

Remember that cushioning is more effective when you’re standing still for extended periods. If your job requires you to walk or run regularly, you might be better off looking for something with less cushioning. You might also consider a toe-spring design, where the front of the boot is slightly curved upward.
