How to Make Sure You’re Adequately Staffed for the Holidays

When it comes to your recruiting calendar, you probably have two sections circled in red ink: the summer and the holiday season. The former can be challenging because of staff shortages due to vacations; the latter is rough because, especially in distribution, business increases at a rate that makes it hard to keep up with your normal employee roster.

But you don’t have to let increased demand steal your holiday cheer. Here are some strategies to help you ramp up your hiring. Spoiler alert: They all involve promoting your employee experience.

Make Sure the Pay You’re Offering is Competitive

The leadup to holiday recruiting is a great time to revisit your pay scale to make sure it’s in line with what other businesses in your industry and location offer. If it is, be sure to include that in your job listings. Salary may not be a candidate’s most important criteria for choosing where to apply, but it will be one of the first things they look for.

Offer a Signing Bonus

If your budget allows, use a signing bonus as an added lure. This will definitely get candidates’ attention. And even though employees who sign on because of a signing bonus may not stay as long as other employees, that won’t matter if you’re most concerned with filling the gaps during the holidays anyway.

Spotlight Your Wellness Programs

One key to boost your recruiting results is pointing out differentiators that set you apart from other employers, and a wellness program is a great example. An Employee Assistance Program (EAP), gym membership reimbursement and health risk assessments are just a few possible components of a program you’ll want to publicize.

Promote Professional Development

If you’re looking to recruit candidates who’ll stay past the holiday season, make any training and professional development opportunities you offer prominent in your posting. If your company is committed to promoting from within, tout that as well
