Recent news headlines have been dominated by labor shortages. While many of these reports focus on service industries, manufacturers have been hit hard as well. In fact, a study conducted by Deloitte LLP and The Manufacturing Institute showed 89% of manufacturing executives say their industry is suffering from a talent shortage, leaving the potential for millions of unfilled positions in the next decade.
If your company has this talent problem, one relatively quick fix is re-evaluating your recruiting efforts – specifically how you market your job openings in your employment posts. It’s no longer sufficient to get the word out that you have work available; rather, you need to market the employment opportunities. Here are three things to keep in mind.
- Market the Job.
One obstacle industrial employers face is that many job seekers approach manufacturing work with many negative preconceptions. They may have the idea that working at a manufacturing place may be boring, repetitive, and potentially dangerous “grunt work.” You can combat this impression by emphasizing the quick pace of your work environment, the variety of tasks an employee may be asked to perform and the complexity of some of the skills required. Your job posting should also mention how high of a priority safety has in your workplace and any industrywide recognition you’ve received for superior safety.
- Market the Opportunity.
Beyond the job itself, what advantages does your company have that make it more appealing to potential candidates? How does your pay compare to other employers seeking labor-oriented jobs? What benefits do you offer? How flexible is your scheduling, and do you offer attractive shift-differential pay? Make sure your job posting answers the question: “What’s in it for me?”
- Market the Work Experience.
Nothing engages job seekers like a good story. Find ways to tell success stories from within your organization. Highlight employees who have had a career that has progressed as they developed their skills. Include quotes from employees who are willing to share what’s so great about working at your company.
