How to Escape Impostor Syndrome and Convince Yourself You’re the Real Deal

Whether you’re going through an interview dry spell, or you are prepping to interview for the job of a lifetime, you may be susceptible to what’s known as impostor syndrome. This condition is the feeling that whatever past success you have had, you are a fraud. People who suffer from impostor syndrome feel like it’s only a matter of time until they fail miserably and are unmasked as a pretender.

If you’ve experienced this feeling, the crushing self-doubt can make you think you can’t succeed and, worse, you don’t deserve to. The good news is that there are a number of coping mechanisms you can use to escape the trap of impostor syndrome. Take these steps to gain a better appreciation of the person you see when you look in the mirror.

Avoiding Imposter Syndrome

Give Yourself a History Lesson

Unless you’re brand new to job-seeking, you have a work history. That experience alone gives you value before you even take into account your accomplishments. And you have had accomplishments! This might be a good time to read your resume and remind yourself where you’ve been and what you’ve done.

Shut Down Negative Self-Talk

One important tactic those with impostor syndrome are often counseled on is combatting negative self-talk. When your inner voice starts telling you that you’re worthless, incompetent, or undeserving, control the conversation by not saying things to yourself you wouldn’t say to others. You deserve as much respect as anyone else. Remind yourself of that when you start internal trash-talking.

Accept Love and Praise from Others

Some people have a hard time taking a compliment; self-proclaimed impostors often refuse them. But it’s important to believe people when they tell you that you have worth and talent. You may even want to reach out to your family, friends, and former co-workers to ask for a pep talk. They can pump you up with the assurances you need to embrace the idea that you can do this.

Take Opportunities to Build Your Value

Another way to give yourself reasons to accept your worth is to take every opportunity you have to learn and grow. Whether it’s picking up some continuing education or keeping your skills and industry knowledge current, use these materials to build and fortify your professional profile.
